A Year On: Stories of Impact from the Community Borehole in Mapanza

BREADtrust • June 19, 2026

When BREADtrust drilled a solar-powered borehole 85 meters deep into the earth, we didn't just find water— we unlocked a future of health, safety, and business for an entire community. One year later, see how this life-giving infrastructure has transformed daily life for the residents of Mapanza, from establishing local livelihoods to providing relief for the elderly.

In September 2025, we successfully installed a community borehole in the Mapanza area.

Reaching a reliable water source required drilling to an exceptional depth of 85 meters. Because a standard hand pump was not viable for this depth, our team installed a solar-powered pump system instead, alongside a dedicated guard house to ensure the long-term security of the infrastructure.

Nearly one year on, this investment is creating lasting, sustainable change for the residents of Mapanza. Rather than just a temporary relief, the borehole has become the foundation for long-term health and economic growth.

Here is how access to clean water has transformed daily life for three members of the community over the past year:

Godfrey | Agriculture and Livelihood

Access to water from the borehole has enabled Godfrey to establish his own pig farming business. Over the last year, his venture has grown; he currently owns five pigs and has been able to employ a local worker to assist him.

Because his livelihood is now tied directly to this infrastructure, Godfrey takes personal responsibility for its upkeep, even carrying out minor repairs himself. He expressed his deep gratitude to BREADtrust and noted that the community remains fully united in maintaining the equipment for the long term.

Emmah | Relief for the Elderly

At 80 years old, Emmah previously faced the daily hardship of carrying heavy water containers from a distant source back to her home. Since the installation of the borehole nearby, collecting clean water has become safe and manageable, bringing a profound and lasting sense of relief to her daily routine.

Mildesy | Family Health and Security

For Mildesy, the borehole has provided a foundation for her family’s ongoing well-being. Over the past several months, she has had a dependable source of safe drinking water and the means to maintain hygiene for her children. Furthermore, the reliable water supply allows her to cultivate crops, providing both food security and an independent source of income for her household.

Supporting Sustainable Clean Water Projects

The enduring success of the Mapanza borehole demonstrates the power of long-term development. Projects like this are only possible through the ongoing generosity of our supporters.

The average cost to drill, install, and secure a community borehole is approximately £3,000. This investment provides a permanent source of clean water for thousands of people and their livestock, fostering health and independence for years to come.
