A Year On: How Clean Water Transformed Mapanza
Last year, BREADtrust drilled an 85-metre-deep solar borehole in Mapanza. We have found more than water. This project has brought better health, safety, and economic opportunity to the community. A year later, this resource has changed daily life. It has created local jobs and helped the elderly.

In September 2025, we drilled 85 metres down to reach a reliable water source. A standard hand pump cannot lift water from this depth. So, we installed a solar-powered pump to solve the problem. We also built a guardhouse to secure the site for the long term. This borehole is not a temporary fix. It is a foundation for lasting health and economic growth.
Here is how clean water changed daily life for three community members this year. We expanded these stories from our latest
Zambia newsletter.
Godfrey | Farming and Livelihoods
Access to reliable water helped Godfrey launch a pig farming business. Over the past year, his farm has expanded. He now owns five pigs and employs a local worker to help him.
Godfrey depends on the new well for his livelihood. He looks after the site and makes minor repairs. The community has come together to care for the water system.
Emmah | Relief for the Elderly
At 80 years old, Emmah struggled daily. Every day she carried heavy water containers over long distances to her home. Now, she collects safe, clean water nearby. This simple change brings immense physical relief to her life.
Mildesy | Family Health and Security
For Mildesy, the borehole protects her family’s future. She finally has a dependable source of safe drinking water. This steady supply helps her grow crops, keep her kids healthy, and earn money for her home.
Supporting Sustainable Clean Water Projects
The borehole project in Mapanza shows how effective long-term development can be. These projects are only made possible through the generosity of our supporters.
It costs £3,000 to drill, install, and secure a community borehole. This investment provides families and livestock with clean water, helping them stay healthy. Saving time on water collection helps these communities stay independent for years.
